L'Aquila

The historic city of L’Aquila is the regional administrative capital of the Abruzzi, a region in central Italy with a high concentration of national and regional parks, nature reserves and protected areas. Situated in the heart of the mountainous region of the Abruzzi at a height of 721 metres above sea level, the city is flanked on the one side by the Velino and Sirente mountain ranges, on the other by the Laga mountains and the Gran Sasso range. The original site was on the hill dividing the territory of Amiterno from that of Forcona. The city was founded in 1254 and laid out with a precise urban design based on the plan of Jerusalem and divided into four quarters.
