Our work focuses on research, knowledge exchange, international engagement, knowledge production, capacity building, and raising awareness. Creative thinking, intellectual excellence and high quality implementation flow across all what we do.

Our peer-reviewed academic conferences and workshops are integral to the Silk Cities' being. We bring together global dispersed knowledge to explore underexplored, yet crucial issues being faced by developing nations. Our academic events are interdisciplinary, transdisciplinary and deal with real life issues which cities and communities face.

While over 1,000 individual researchers and practitioners directly participated in our international conferences, the impact of Silk Cities knowledge exchange and research projects spread globally through its peer-reviewed publications with Springer and self-published open-access eBooks.  Publication is a tool to disseminate collective knowledge generated in our academic events and through research.   We closely collaborate with academics and researchers from our network to produce peer-reviewed publications.

Interactive Then & Now is a cumulative interdisciplinary project which aims to raise global awareness about selected local heritage properties considering their cultural significance for local communities that nevertheless are abandoned, destroyed or difficult to access. Its geographic focus is on but not limited to those countries along the Silk Roads countries.

Silk Cities contributes to urban cultural life through festivals that celebrate the intersections of cities, architecture, art, and community. These events open the city as a site of encounter, focusing on creative expression to connect people, heritage, histories, and spatial practices.

The Urban Talks series invites diverse voices to discuss contemporary urban challenges and opportunities. Each session encourages open and accessible dialogue between researchers, professionals, and participants, promoting thinking about the past, the present and the future of cities.
