Urban Talks - Digital Heritage: Opportunites and Challenges

On 23 June 2026, Silk Cities hosted the new session of its Urban Talks series, titled Digital Heritage: Opportunities and Challenges Moderated by Ehsan Fatehifar, the online discussion brought together Dr. Guzden Varinlioğlu (University of Liverpool), Sepehr Vaez Afshar, and Sarvin Eshaghi (University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign). The panel showcased their research on the SILK Project, highlighting the documentation and digital reconstruction of Silk Road caravanserais through photogrammetry, parametric modelling, 360° media, digital twins, and immersive technologies. They also introduced the newly released SILK 2.0 game on Steam, demonstrating how gamification and AI can support heritage interpretation and public engagement. The discussion explored the opportunities and challenges of digital heritage, focusing on XR, gamification, AI, sustainable documentation, and the future of digital twins in cultural heritage. A central theme was the importance of making heritage accessible beyond academic audiences by creating engaging, interactive, and community-oriented experiences while maintaining historical authenticity. The panel also emphasized interdisciplinary collaboration, responsible AI adoption, and the need to treat digital documentation as a lasting research output rather than simply a project deliverable. The session concluded with an interactive Q&A, launching the Silk Cities Urban Talk series as a platform for dialogue between researchers, practitioners, and the wider public.
